A probe has been launched by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of 78-year-old Gopinath Pillai, the petitioner in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case and father of Pranesh Kumar Pillai alias Javed Sheikh.
The spot, where the accident happened in which Gopinathan Pillai lost his life, has been visited by district police chief S Surendran along with forensic experts.
Four vehicles have been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The vehicles which were taken to custody are a mini lorry, tanker lorry, car and a mini lorry of KSDP.
Sijeev Pattankkad, a Chalakkudy native who is the driver of the tanker lorry suspected to have hit the back of the car involved in the accident, is in police custody.
Due to the impact of the hit, the car in which Gopinath Pillai was travelling moved into the opposite track after a vehicle rammed into its back. Paint residues were found on the back of the car by forensic experts.
According to the CCTV visuals which were recovered from nearby areas, eight vehicles passed through the road close to each other at the time of the accident. Other vehicles are being searched by the police.
The investigation team includes Cherthala DySP, special branch DySP and SIs of Arthunkal, Mararikkulam, Mannancherry and Pattanakkad police stations.
Gopinath Pillai breathed his last on Friday while undergoing treatment after he was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the National Highway near Vayalar.
