Almost 40 lakh people in Assam have become stateless after the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). They did not find a place in the list after the Registrar General of India (RGI) on Monday found them ineligible to be included in it. The new list has invited strong political controversy with the opposition parties criticizing the ruling BJP for attempting to divide the people for political gains.
“This is a draft; we will wait for the final one. Till then, there will be status quo on the rights and privileges (of those not included in NRC),” said Registrar General of India Sailesh. He added, “there could be several reasons why those people could not substantiate their claims.”
Asked about the voting rights of those excluded from the list, Sailesh said, “this is a subject matter of the election commission and I am not the competent authority to comment on it.”
More chance has been given to those who could not make it to the NRC to prove their citizenship.
